ISG - M&S Chesterfield

Project:- M&S Chesterfield

Location:- Chesterfield
Architect:- ISG
Brief:- The project involved large-scale external signage, including flex face displays and built-up illuminated letters, as well as internal signage across the food hall and clothing section.

The Project Brief

Marks & Spencer (M&S) in Chesterfield, one of the UK’s leading retail brands, embarked on a comprehensive store upgrade, requiring a full signage implementation throughout the location. The project involved large-scale external signage, including flex face displays and built-up illuminated letters, as well as internal signage across the food hall and clothing sections. The scope also included the manufacture and installation of illuminated wayfinding signage to enhance customer experience. Image Technique was tasked with delivering the signage solutions under ISG, the main contractor for the project.

The Challenge

The project presented several challenges, particularly due to the scale of the external signage, which had to maintain the M&S brand’s prestige while being highly visible from a distance. The intricate design and large dimensions of the flex face and built-up letters required precise execution to ensure structural stability and aesthetic appeal. Internally, the signage for the food hall and clothing areas needed to seamlessly integrate with the store’s modern layout, providing clarity and enhancing the customer journey. The project had to be completed within tight deadlines, as the store was preparing for a key relaunch. Additionally, with the unfortunate closure of ISG, the project required careful coordination to ensure continuity and timely completion.

How We Helped

Image Technique worked closely with ISG and M&S throughout the project, providing a full signage solution from design through to installation. For the external works, we designed, manufactured, and installed large-scale flex face signage and built-up illuminated letters, ensuring high durability and maximum visual impact. Internally, we developed bespoke illuminated signage for the food hall and clothing sections, along with strategically placed wayfinding signage to improve navigation. Our team ensured that all signage met M&S’s strict brand guidelines and that the installation was completed with minimal disruption to the store’s operations.

Outcomes

The project was delivered successfully, with both external and internal signage enhancing the store’s modern and inviting atmosphere. The large-scale flex face and built-up illuminated letters have made a significant impact, creating a striking presence for M&S Chesterfield. Inside the store, the illuminated and wayfinding signage has improved customer navigation and contributed to an enhanced shopping experience. The project was completed on time, despite the challenges posed by ISG’s closure, and M&S has expressed their satisfaction with the final results.

Looking Ahead

While the demise of ISG marks the end of an era, we look forward to continuing our relationship with M&S and exploring future opportunities. As retail continues to evolve, Image Technique is ready to provide cutting-edge signage solutions that enhance customer experience and maintain the brand’s iconic status.
